My Journey to Health
How nutrition changed my life
I’m Jen: nutrition nerd, sun-worshipper, lover of good food and fine wine, closet goofball, and gym rat at heart. I’m also a certified integrative nutrition health coach (INHC). As I was approaching my 20’s, I was dissatisfied with myself and the chronic digestive discomfort I suffered from. I decided to embark on a journey toward health and wellness. Over the past decade, I’ve made many changes to my diet and lifestyle with the hopes of healing my mind and body. Having been diagnosed with chronic GERD or acid reflux, IBS, a plethora of food sensitivities, chronic sinusitis, and anxiety, I experimented through a lot of trial and error and began a search for a cure to my ailments. The chronic bloating that became my “norm” just added to my already poor body image and fueled my adherence to restrictive patterns of eating. You name it, I’ve probably tried it: veganism, vegetarian diets, pescetarian diets, paleo diets, low-fat, sugar-free, low-carb, calorie counting, macro obsessing, etc. Little did I know all of these “diets” were just making my food sensitivities worse. They were wreaking havoc on my mind, gut, and immune system.
After visiting many GI doctors and medical practitioners and getting an array of tests done (SIBO testing, fructose intolerance testing, lactose intolerance testing, endoscopies, etc.), yet having no success, I took matters into my own hands. I did my own research and decided to study nutrition in order to heal and to help others like myself. I discovered that I’m very sensitive to FODMAPs, a complicated name for a group of carbohydrates found in many foods that are poorly digested in some individuals. Going on a low FODMAP diet was my first step in healing. From there, I became more in tune with my body and its nutritional needs. I’ve learned that a gluten-free and dairy-free diet works best for my body, and with time, I healed my chronic GERD as well.
In healing my body, I began to heal my mind. I immersed myself in a holistic lifestyle that placed self-love and care as a priority. Through meditation, good nutrition, a healthy fitness routine, and being true to myself, I had finally arrived to my intended destination: balance and food freedom.
I don't know how I ever lived with such inflammation, discomfort, and unhappiness before. It took me a long time to dramatically improve my symptoms. I know first hand how difficult it can be making big changes to your lifestyle and how frustrating it can be to travel around in circles with no answers. What I also know is, I’m not alone. Many of you also may have food intolerances or suffer from aggravating and/or embarrassing digestive issues that are taking over your life. Many may feel a lack of energy, struggle with cravings, or want to drop some weight and feel great about themselves again. Others may want to follow or experiment with certain diets (e.g., dairy-free, gluten-free, vegan, paleo), but are uncertain about how to begin. I can relate to a lot of you on many levels. Why not confide in someone who has been through it too, can empathize, and can help guide you to your own health goals?
I specialize in helping those with digestive issues, leaky gut syndrome, IBS, food sensitivities, and low immunity. I have experience with gluten-free, dairy-free, anti-inflammatory, low FODMAP diets.
